Snowed OUT!

It's not often that someone get's snowed OUT, but it has officially happened to us here in central MN visiting my parents at their home on Big Pine Lake. The kids have enjoyed a week of ice fishing with Grandpa Brandt, skating on the rink he flooded for them in front of his house, and doing crafts with Nana Brandt while drinking hot cocoa to warm up between playing in the snow. It has been a wonderful way to spend our week. We really do enjoy the country. Often you hear of people being snowed in, but today my dear husband is snowed OUT and on his way to visit us. He decided to take the Amtrak train to Detroit Lakes, just 20 miles from my parents house instead of driving the three hours in the freezing rain and foot of snow that accumulated in central MN yesterday after he finished work. We dropped off our van at the train station yesterday so that he could drive home when the train arrived in the middle of the night. However, by the time that the train arrived, both I-94 and Hwy 10 were closed down and the plows had long been pulled of the road due to hazardous conditions. None of the side streets or back roads had been plowed. He was stuck in Detroit Lakes, literally snowed OUT. Being the thrifty guy he is, he refused to spend money on a hotel room for the remaining hours of the night and he camped in the van using one of the kids' sleeping bags left from winter camping last weekend. He's now called several times to check on the status of the long country road where my parents live. Unfortunately, it hasn't been plowed yet and it's not a big priority. We're all snowed in and he's snowed OUT. Kind of a funny thing to have happen!

The good news is that the kids can't wait for him to arrive and have been counting down the days, hours, minutes until he arrives. Every time they hear that there is a delay in his arrival they are disappointed and we work through tears and fears that he may not be joining us at all. It is good to be able to comfort them and to encourage them in their relationship with their father. This is fabulous progress in bonding and attachment for our big girls.

We will enjoy a Happy New Year's holiday, especially when we are all reunited later today!

That was kind of fun to have happen.
He'll get there! And we should just call Nic MacGyver!
