A continual dripping on a rainy day
and a quarrelsome wife are alike;
Proverbs 25:24
It is better to live in a corner of the housetop
than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.
Like most teenage girls, I'm sure that my daughters like to imagine what their Prince Charming will be like someday. While we certainly can, and do, pray for their future husbands, there is nothing we can do to change or shape the future Mr. Wonderful's character. (We do aim to train our sons for their future role as someone special's Prince Charming.) It has been our goal to train our daughters for their likely futures as wives and mothers. They have precious time now to grow in their faith and to live daily lives of joyful, purposeful service.
Everywhere we are challenged and surrounded by the minor annoyances in life that could have us complaining and quarreling. Yes, they are everywhere if we only look - or if our hearts are bent to see them jumping out at us around every corner. Often times, relationships with other humans (children, spouses, siblings, parents) tend to magnify personal annoyances, leading to a quarreling and complaining. We can either choose to be that continual dripping, or we can be like David in Psalm 138 giving thanks with our whole heart, even in the midst of trouble.
Last week with all the rain, snow, melting, and blowing our kids got to see the impact of a continual dripping and visit the vantage point of living in a corner of the housetop. Actually experiencing these realities is a unique way to put into perspective how our attitudes of quarreling and complaining impact those around us. We ended up with a series of profusely dripping water spots along our kitchen ceiling likely caused by a leak through the shingles where an exterior wall meets the roof line. There is nothing like a constant dripping on your homeschooling table to make the school day more interesting - and challenging. A few of the kids were able to go up on the roof with Nic to check out the potential cause. I remained in the kitchen with 911 on speed dial watching for falling children, but only needed to call the insurance adjuster instead.
Sometimes Mondays are hard to manage, but I am so thankful for the unique lessons God teaches us through His Word and through daily life experiences.
