A Surprising Advantage of RAD

One of the surprising advantages of RAD is that kids with attachment challenges are usually very well behaved in public!

BONUS! (Only when you're in public, though.)

Sometimes it is a real bugger when the child who has just attacked you at home, screaming threats at you and destroying property behaves like an angel in public. Really, no one would believe it is the same child. OR, no one would believe you are telling the truth about said child. Either way it leaves you feeling a bit crazy as a mom of a RAD kiddo.

But we are going to make the most of the bonus of the public face for a few days and take a road trip! This is our first official family vacation and we are hoping to build some good family memories, enjoy some bonding time, and have fun with one another. We are half way to South Dakota tonight, staying in a hotel for the night and then on to a large cabin in the mountains. The kids have travelled like troopers. They are so excited to learn, see, and do all the historical stuff that we learned about earlier this year. We are incredibly blessed to be able to have this opportunity together.

We know that we have made progress because 18 months ago, 12 months ago, even 6 months ago their anxiety was too great to enjoy a trip like this without having ruined it before leaving the driveway. Rejoicing tonight for answered prayers.

How wonderful!

If you can make it over to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Living History museum outside of DeSmet, DO GO! That was one of our favorite parts of our long road trip last summer--nothing but lots of fresh air in a peaceful setting, with loads of great activities for the kids to experience! If you see this comment before your trip is over, and you want a preview, please visit my blog to see what I wrote about it last year:

I so appreciate what your family is doing to love the world--I hope you have a great trip! : )

Have a glorious time in the glorious place God has provided for your first "real" vacation as a family. I'm sure He has many small and big blessings planned for the trip! Love to you ALL -- Auntie Deb.
