Remembering God's Faithfulness

Deuteronomy 8:1-3“The whole commandment that I command you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers.  And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.  And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord."

It has been such a busy spring and summer and a busy few months that it has been hard to find time to sit down, reflect, and journal about God's faithfulness.  And when I do take the time to reflect on His faithfulness throughout creation, in history, and in our daily lives, I find myself overwhelmed by all that He has done for us!

Sometimes it is hard to put into words my awe at His faithfulness and lovingkindness.  And most mornings, my thoughts are interrupted by wakeful children ready to begin the routines of the day.  Like the piles of homeschool correcting that lay around on various flat surfaces of my house waiting for me to attend to them, my early morning reflections often get left behind.  They are scattered in the wake of life that goes on around me: meals to prepare, lessons to teach, schoolwork to correct, errands to run, toilets to unplug, calls to return, wounds to bandage, appointments to make or cancel, laundry to fold, dance rehearsals to attend, soccer games to cheer for.

It is in these moments of life that I witness God's faithfulness abound to me.  I often wish that I could grab hold of the moment, let it linger, and cherish it completely, taking time to record my awe and wonder at what God is doing in each moment.  But time is not like that.  The next moment is upon us just after the last has ended.  These precious moments that make up our days come in a flood from morning to night, day to day, week to week.

I wish I could go back and recount the many instances of God's faithfulness to our family over the past months.  They are too numerous to count.  God's faithfulness has sustained us through great trials, has comforted us in great sorrows, and has delighted us with great joys.  During the summers our church holds its Wednesday night service at Long Lake Regional Park.  There is always a meal, worship, teaching, and time for families to fellowship together.  The theme this summer is to remember God's faithfulness.  It has been a good time for our family to share in remembering God's faithfulness to His people.

The interesting thing about remembering God's faithfulness as commanded in Deuteronomy 8:1-3 above is that it is not absent of trials and heartache.  It is not a feel-good gospel or a promise of prosperity.  Instead, God's command to remember includes the trials, the testing, the humbling, the hungering of His people so that we can see His sovereign grace and His love toward us.

Such beautiful words Megan.
I often start my day singing hymns, and one of my favorites is "Great is Thy Faithfulness."
"Morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed, Thy hand has provided....."
Thank you (and thanks also for coming to your Kindergarten class's high school graduation. I would have loved to talk with you, but you were surrounded by a crowd!)
