Comedy

Some days my life is like a comedy.  I really could not make these things up if I tried.  Earlier in the month it was an interaction with a distant county sheriff's office, a "runaway" child, and slander within our home.  (Maybe when I have time I'll blog about God's faithfulness in all of that and give kudos to our amazing law enforcement officers, but for now, suffice it to say that was a doozey.) Two weeks ago it was a suspicious ultrasound of a lump on my back, my first even CT scan, and an intense two days waiting for the results while my husband was out of cell phone range canoeing in the Boundary Water's Canoe Area with our sons.  Last week it was lice, projectile vomiting, and three sweet guests age 4 and under here through Safe Families for Children.  Today my agenda for nap time (the nap time of two those three sweeties, that is) was to make my final selections for curriculum and order what I need so that we can start school in the coming weeks.

But nooooooo...

There was the extremely overtired 1 year old who cried for 45 minutes only to fall asleep and become inconsolable as soon as she was set down in the pack and play.

When she finally fell asleep I sat down at the computer with my BIG mug of coffee and my curriculum spreadsheet, and I opened several curriculum websites when the fluffy dog needed to be taken out and commenced with prolonged whining until we visited his toilet in the trees.

On my way back inside I was met by sweet 4-year-old guest and frustrated pre-teen daughter  coming from the swing set.  Pre-teen was lamenting a head full of sand from below the swing set.  Lesson on apologizing and shaking sand out of hair commenced.

Once I finally arrived back inside with the dog and sent the 4-year-old and pre-teen happily back to swing and blow bubbles together, the dogs again started their sorrowful whining, which is not like them in the least.  It was then that I realized that that person whose chore is to feed the dogs is gone visiting Grandpa and Nana and the dogs have likely been hungry for a day or two now.  Poor dogs.  (Our chore system works great when everyone is home, but there are glitches when the assigned "helper" is gone for the week.)

Oh, to sit back down again, more motivated than ever to purchase my curriculum and get organized with what little nap time is left.

I successfully ordered an activity packet and test PDF files from Peace Hill Press and was pleased to print my receipt when the printer made an awful noise that sounded like it was choking on the paper. And it was!  My screen indicated paper jam and I followed the necessary steps to clear it out and then needed to wash the ink off my hands.

When I sat down again, the sweet, visiting 4-year-old and pre-teen daughter brought me a chicken egg to wash, label and put in the fridge.

I am just now beginning to think that I may not accomplish my curriculum purchasing task after all today.  And that is okay.

And then the phone rings and it is a dear friend that I have not talked to for over a month!  I sneak out to the garage with my coffee to find a quiet place to talk and relish the remaining  minutes of nap time when in walks sweet 4-year-old guest and pre-teen daughter who in all their sweetness and dramatics just may die without a frozen icee.

Icees are cut open and the sweet girls decide to eat them in the garage, so I escape to the bench on the front porch, away from the noise, savoring the last of the minutes of nap time.

And then comes my two sweet friends (4-year old and preteen) to bring me the mail, sitting right next to me, leaning heads on my shoulders, suffocating any potential for conversation and eliminating any possible preparations for the school year.

Not as comedic as some days around here, but definitely par for the course.

Tomorrow.

Maybe tomorrow I will order my curriculum.

For today I will spend the afternoon playing with the visiting little guests and laughing with my pre-teen and teenage daughters about the antics of the afternoon.
