Harder Than We Dreamed

Matthew 16:25
For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Sunday was our 13th wedding anniversary.   It was a wonderful day to celebrate God's faithfulness in our marriage.  It was a day much like any other.  It was real (full of hard and messy realities) and it was good.

Hard and good.  That's what God's promises are for!

We had two extra kiddos (friends of our littles) with us for church and we filled up an entire row. Looking down the row I was struck with how those eight children were now hearing the gospel and worshiping Jesus together when at one time they had all been orphans.  What a sweet gift to be able to witness God's faithfulness in their lives and ours over the past 13 years!

After church we attended a send-off meal for friends of ours who are leaving for Peru as missionaries. It was such a sweet time of hearing testimonies of God's faithfulness in preparing their hearts to return to Peru.  It was a sweet time of being loved, welcomed, embraced, and encouraged by those in the Hispanic ministry at our church.  How amazing that God leads, directs, and calls families to do hard things and He promises to be with them in the journey.  It is sad to send our friends off and exciting to see what God has in store for them there.  The gift of friends to walk with us through the joys and trials of marriage and family life is an amazing blessing.

We ended our anniversary getting together with two other large families for a beautiful supper where 19 of our total 25 children enjoyed playing together and enjoying the summer evening.  Knowing God's faithfulness as He provides just what we and our children need is the best blessing in our marriage and as we celebrate God building our family.  He has not always provided an easy way, or a path without pain.  Often it has been harder than we dreamed, but His promises are true.

I am so thankful for a husband that loves the Lord, seeking Jesus with his whole heart, desiring to lead and care for our family.  I am so thankful for a husband who is my best friend in this journey as we follow Christ together, seeking to lose our lives for His sake.

Every time I hear the song Dancing in the Minefields by Andrew Peterson I am reminded of God's promises and His faithfulness to us in our marriage.  It has been harder than we dreamed...but that's what God's promises are for!  Happy anniversary, Nic!
