Ten Around the Table: A Perspective of Joyful Service

Hebrews 13:1-2
Let brotherly love continue.  Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Last week was a busy week.  It included New Year's celebrations and services, play dates and sleep overs, getting back to school, recovering from Christmas travel and preparing for another work trip for Nic.  In the midst of our every day crazy life, God has laid in on our hearts to minister together as a family with Safe Families for Children.  While many may think that our daily life is hectic enough as it is, we have a sense of joy in serving these children and families.  When there are already eight of us, what is one or two more to add to the mix.

This past weekend we had ten around the table, welcoming a sweet little brother and sister for a weekend of respite through Safe Families for Children.  It was an absolute joy and delight to welcome these little ones into our boisterous home.  Even though it is a mental shift to add diaper changes and nap times back into our agenda, it is a joy to be able to love and serve together.  It has also been such a great opportunity for each of our kids to share in serving with their talents and abilities.  Our younger kids can read and play with the kids who have come, and our older kids get a hands-on active role in caring for a young child by helping to feed them, changing diapers, rocking little ones,  dressing them, and packing a diaper bag for outings.  The lessons we learn together through active service, especially the lessons of the heart, are a great blessing for us all.
